Stretch and Flex Program: An Intervention to Reduce Work-Related Injuries in the Construction Industry
Brent Monk and Ben Osborne leading the morning stretch and flex program at the Omaha National Cemetery construction site. The onsite stretching program is conducted during the morning safety meeting and all employees are required to participate in the exercises.
Stretching is an important factor in maintaining the muscle’s pliability and length. Stretching the upper back, lower back, hamstrings and calves can decrease the risk of pain, soft tissue injuries and injury to the spine. This can help the body to maintain proper biomechanical position and decrease the possibility of musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries on the job.
Employees should take into consideration the extent of their physical capabilities. They should discuss with their medical physician previous injuries or medical conditions that may limit their participation in the program.
Nationwide companies, contractors, and insurance carriers are implementing stretch and flex programs. The benefits are indisputable, with injury reduction noted upon implementation of stretch and flex programs.
